History:
In 1993, the New Mexico State Legislature generously voted an appropriation authorizing steps one and two of what was envisioned as a six-step cultural resources documentary project. Steps one and two were to be a paper directory and an "infobase" of cultural information. New Mexico's Cultural Treasures, a direct result of the above mentioned authorization, has been produced under the auspices of the Office of Statewide Programs and Education of the Museum of New Mexico.
In addition to this web site, a reference book containing the data collected for this project will be published in the fall of 1997. Included in the book will be a Filemaker Pro database on computer diskettes. Books and diskettes will be available from the Office of Statewide Programs and Education, Museum of New Mexico, PO Box 2087, Santa Fe NM 87504-2087; 505-476-5097.
Criteria for inclusion in this directory:
- New Mexico's Cultural Treasures is a guide to cultural sites and collections in the state of New Mexico. The term, "cultural sites," aside from its obvious reference to museums, refers to state and national parks, zoological parks, historical societies, public archives, library and any other publicly accessible collections in the state. The producers of this site have been "broad constructionists" in interpreting our mission, inclining towards inclusion.
- A good faith attempt was made to locate each and every non-profit cultural site in New Mexico. We have no doubt failed to succeed 100%, but we will continue to work on it in the coming year. Please help us find collections and sites we have missed.
- Only non-profit institutions with professional staff and publicly accessible collections have been included in this survey.

NOTE: In compiling information for this site we have relied heavily upon and borrowed liberally from the excellent "Enchanted Lifeways" book published earlier in 1996 by the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs and New Mexico Magazine. Special thanks goes to Doug Svetnicka, the "Enchanted Lifeways" Project Director. The "New Mexico Cultural Resources Directory," published in 1991 by the New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs, was also very useful for its rich information. Thanks must also go to Pat Miles and the New Mexico Association of Museums for providing us with a digital copy of their Members Directory; this gave us an invaluable starting point in our search for information.
